| On this page we will attempt to explain hip height and where the
measurement is to be taken there will be a photograph to show, hopefully this
will ease any confusion.
The recognised measurement of hip height for miniature Belties
are as follows.
Maxium Mature hip height for males = 125cm or 49
inches, and females = 120cm or 47 inches smaller is better.
Suggested hip height at 12 months = 100cm
This Photograph shows the approximately where to measure the hip
height. As you will see the measurement is from the ground. You can use a square
with a bubble across the hips to get a straight measurement. Note the ground
must be level

This is only a rough guide as there are many variables that come
into the equation these can be due to weaning to early, under nourishment at
weaning etc.
Things to look closely at are that the Miniature is growing in
the correct proportions:
Head, feet, tail, etc are not to large for the age and the size
of the rest of the Miniature; This is the same for all breeds of
miniatures.
We practice selective breeding to get our miniatures,
weaning occurs when the calf reachs between 7-8 months of age, when we commence
to wean the young calves we hand feed them with hay along with the grass that
they graze for them selves. This maintains the growth rate of the young stock
along with them becoming used to being handled in a calm and friendly manner.
While this is our pratice many do not do this as it can be very time consuming,
but is well worth the effort as the young calves learn to trust
humans.

MINIATURE CATTLE CATEGORY HEIGHT REGULATIONS
There are two categories of Miniature Cattle, Full Miniature and Mid
Size Miniature. The category an animal fits in is a function of age and height.
For example an animal 40" @ 18 mo would be a full miniature. An animal 42" @ l8
mo would be mid size miniature (see chart). All measurements are at the hip (see
below drawing). The above frame chart applies to all cattle of both genders.
